History Tour Guide

  • Description: History Tour Guides are passionate about sharing history and are great story tellers! Wheatland's guides dress in 1860 period fashions provided by LancasterHistory.org. Guides provide personalized guided tours for visitors of all ages through the interior spaces at President James Buchanan's Wheatland. In addition to history tours, Wheatland offers opportunities to participate in living history programs when they are presented during the main season.
  • Skills Required: Enthusiastic about history; dependable & motivated; possess good verbal communication skills; possess the ability to be on your feet for an hour and ability to climb stairs. Must be 17 years or older. Available to work a 3 hour shift.
  • Training/Education/Experience Required: Staff will provide historical content training as well as guidance on best practices with guiding groups through and around antiques within a 19th century environment. Volunteers will also receive articles and books to read to increase their knowledge on various subjects. New volunteers will be scheduled to shadow other Wheatland guides as part of their training.
  • Payroll Status: Volunteer (unpaid)
  • Schedule: Shifts are available Monday - Saturday from 10am to 1pm AND 1pm to 3pm 

 

Junior History Tour Guide

  • Description: Junior History Tour Guides are between the ages of 12 and 17, and possess a passion and intense interest of history! Like our older guides, Junior History Tour Guides dress in 1860 period fashions provided by LancasterHistory.org. Following a period of training, Junior guides will be scheduled to partner with other tour guides and assist with an interpretation on personalized guided tours. In addition to history tours, Wheatland offers opportunities to participate in living history programs when they are presented during the main season.
  • Skills Required: Enthusiastic about history; dependable & motivated; possess good verbal communication skills; possess the ability to be on your feet for an hour and ability to climb stairs. Must be between the ages of 12 and 17. Available to work a 3 hour shift.
  • Training/Education/Experience Required: Staff will provide historical content training as well as guidance on best practices with guiding groups through and around antiques within a 19th century environment. Volunteers will also receive articles and books to read to increase their knowledge on various subjects. New volunteers will be scheduled to shadow other Wheatland guides as part of their training.
  • Payroll Status: Volunteer (unpaid)

Researcher

Currently not accepting any volunteers for this position.

  • Description: Research volunteers assist the Director of President James Buchanan's Wheatland with investigation of topics that expand our knowledge about the life of James Buchanan and his family as well as a variety of other fascinating subjects. 
  • Skills Required: Ethusiastic about history; dependable & motivated; possess good verbal writing skills. Must be at least 16. 
  • Training/Education/Experience Required: Staff will provide basic guidance on research using primary and secondary sources. Additionally, staff will provide guidance on source locations and best practices for citing sources when drafting reports. 
  • Payroll Status: Volunteer (unpaid)
  • Schedule: As coordinated with Patrick Clarke, Director of President James Buchanan's Wheatland

 

Youth Group Museum Educator

  • Description: Youth Group Museum Educators are passionate about American history and enjoy teaching young people about the subject. Volunteers will provide special tours of the President's mansion for students in elementary school, middle school, high school, college, and for home schooled students.
  • Skills Required: Enthusiastic about history; dependable & motivated; possess good verbal communication skills; possess the ability to be on your feet for an hour and ability to climb stairs. Must be 18 years or older. Available to work a 1-2 hour program.
  • Training/Education/Experience Required: Staff will provide historical content training as well as guidance on best practices with guiding groups through and around antiques within a 19th century environment. Volunteers will also receive articles and books to read to increase their knowledge on various subjects. New volunteers will be scheduled to shadow other educators as part of their training.
  • Payroll Status: Volunteer (unpaid)
  • Schedule: As coordinated with Patrick Clarke, Director of President James Buchanan's Wheatland
