CLASS: Becoming the Family Archivist
Learn how to preserve your family's history for future generations. This workshop will cover the preservation and organization of documents such as letters, deeds, and newspaper clippings. Please bring examples from your collection. Photographs and textiles will not be covered in this class.

Annual Dinner
Join us as the Lancaster County Historical Society’s Annual Dinner returns to the newly renovated Lancaster Country Club. Enjoy an evening of cocktails, fine dining, and good company as President and CEO Tom Ryan recounts the highlights of the Historical Society’s past year and what events lie in the year ahead. Taxes have always been with us.  Learn how to understand and interpret what tax records can show us about our ancestors. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of genealogy.  Instructor: Jim Landis.

Regional History Colloquium
Daniel Strickler
Speaker: Crystal Bollinger

Crystal Bollinger will kick off the weekend’s festivities with a lecture about the life of General Daniel Strickler as interpreted through his scrapbooks. Gen. Strickler, a native of Columbia, first served in the Mexican Border Campaign in 1916 with the PA National Guard. He continued his service through World War I, World War II and the Korean War before retiring from the military in 1957 at the rank of Lieutenant General. For more on the life of Gen. Strickler, come to the Historical Society’s Regional History Colloquium on Friday May 16 – refreshments at 4:00 p.m., lecture at 4:30.

World War II Encampment

Come catch a glimpse of living history as the Donut Dollies, paratroopers, pilots, and GIs once again set up camp on the lawn of the Lancaster County Historical Society. A whole host of events is scheduled for the weekend of May 16 through May 18, so come and learn a thing or two about Lancaster’s part in World War II. The encampment will run Saturday May 17, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Sunday May 18, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Call 717-392-4633 for more information.

CLASS: Whispering Down the Lane: How to Conduct an Oral History

Join Stauffer Curator Barry Rauhauser on Saturday May 17 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. for a lesson on interviewing your favorite veteran – or any other member of your family or the community. Topics of this class will include the interview process, methods and techniques, and transcribing and editing your interview. Cost for the class is $20 for members of the Historical Society and $25 for non-members. To register, call 717-392-4633.

Get Your Swing On!!
Break out your dancing shoes and join our soldiers on the lawn on Saturday night from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m for our U.S.O. Dance. Music provided by the Moonlighters will get you in the mood for cuttin’ a rug. Admission is $5.00. Bring lawn chairs.

PhotoFest 2008
Capping off our weekend of wartime activities is our annual photo harvest. In preparation for the Historical Society’s fourth photographic history book, Lancaster At War, we’re looking for a little help from our friends. If you have photos of wartime activities from the Civil War to the present, from life on the homefront in Lancaster County or service overseas, we’d love to take a look. We’ll scan the best and return them. PhotoFest will run from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday May 18. Help us preserve Lancaster County’s visual history and your family photo might appear in our next book!

CLASS: African-American Genealogy
Join us to explore the unique genealogical challenges of African-Americans.  We’ll look at slave records, Freedman’s Bureau records and other sources that provide helpful clues in tracing the ancestry of African-Americans. Instructor: Kevin Shue.

Trip to China and Tibet.
     Join the Lancaster County Historical Society this fall as we take off on a sixteen-day, once-in-a- lifetime “Roof of the World” tour of China and Tibet. Departing from Lancaster on September 25, 2008, the trip will kick off in Beijing. Further exploration of Shanghai, Lhasa and Tibet will follow, as well as a six-day cruise on the Yangtze River.
     Highlights of the trip will include a visit to Tiananmen Square, walking along the Great Wall of China, exploring the Yangtze River, sailing through the breathtaking Lesser Three Gorges and the Three Gorges Dam.
